I was curious what everyone thought about this talk about a smoking ban in Tupelo.
I'll go on the record and say I think it stinks and yes, I smoke. Regardless of that, I think a business owner should have the right to say whether he wants his clientel to smoke or not. The consumer should have the right to go to places that allow smoking or not. Why should the goverment have anything to say about it? People choose to smoke, just like they choose to drink.
That's my .02 cents, let's hear yours.

I do not smoke in anyone's business. Usually not even if they allow it. I wait.(Because no one else in my family smokes) But if I want to and it is allowed I do not think anyone should tell me different. The none smokers can sit across the building from me.

I don't really have a problem with smokers, IF they respect me regarding their smoking habits. As an ex-smoker (2 &1/2 packs per day) , I know the most addicting qualities of the cigarette. I was, at that time only 23 years old and unable to walk across the room without wheezing and unable to breathe well. So I had to quit. Surely anybody would understand why I would not want to sit near a smoker breathing second-hand smoke? Some of my closest friends are smokers. They respect my air space by going outside to smoke. If I am in their home, I do not expect them to not smoke, so I have two choices, either leave, or bear with it. However, I have had people come into my home, without regard to me or my family, just light up their cigarette and blow smoke into all my furnishings and curtains, then ask for an ash tray. So, I am all for letting people smoke if they want to as long as they are considerate of nonsmokers. Would that seem to be a fair solution to the smoking class? Government should not have to interfere if people can work it out between themselves.

Dangit TFADMIN. I post good factual information about the insanity that is our local government, and you give a blessing to a former smoker? Hmmm...I guess I'll have to try harder.

I smoke. More than I probably should. I don't, however, smoke in my house at the request of my wife who quit when she was pregnant and has never smoked since. It's been over three years now. I do smoke in the vehicle but only with the window cracked about 4 inches and I hold my cigarette at said crack for the entire ride. There's just something about having to smoke while you drive.
As for a public ban... is this for inside buildings or anywhere in public including outside? As it is right now I smoke outside anyhow. In public or not. But I don't think my ability to smoke inside should be taken away from me even if I don't use it all that often.

I am a smoker and you know me, I got an opinion on this, but it does not flow with majority...I think each business owner should be allowed to say yeah you can smoke, or no you cannot. That is the perks of ownership of an establishment. Some resturants that serve alcohol, a cigarette and alcohol just make a relaxing evening, so I can see a problem for those. There is always a nonsmoking section for those whom it bothers. When I take my grandkids out to eat, I always sit in the nonsmoking for them. It's a matter of respect.

Exactly, Granny2young. I do the same with my family. IF we go to a resteraunt we sit in no smoking. I just light up as we walk out.
Out of curiosity... is this ban just for indoors or will we be banned from smoking in parking lots and sidewalks too?

gosh Crimson I hope it only applies to inside. Since a business owner does not own the streets I can't see how that can be enforced, but stranger things have happened. I do enjoy a smoke after a big meal, and if the kids are not with me, I sit in the smoking section so I can enjoy my cigarette after I eat, and I would assume that anyone in the smoking section does not mind if I light up. If they do, sit in the non-smoking section and the problem is solved.

I think banning smoking in public is wrong as long as smokers have a designated area. Magnolia smokes, I don't. We sit in smoking areas when we eat out unless all the kids are with us. Smoke doesn't bother me until later when it goes stale and I smell it on my clothes. Magnolia cannot smoke in the house. I don't want my house smelling like that. I feel like gagging when we get home from her parents' house. She went on a trip this weekend and her luggage made my eyes water, it reeked so badly. She also can't smoke in my truck but she smokes in her car with the windows cracked so it won't smell the car up and ruin the cream white interior. The biggest problem I have with smokers is littering. She yelled at the girls for throwing paper out of the car but then she threw out a cigarette wrapper?? I can't stand all the cigarette butts that smokers throw out of their cars. The filters aren't biodegradable, they're made of polyester. I say we tax the Hell out of cigarettes because they cause inflated health costs for everyone. The only thing I know that they are good for is they cure tapeworms when you eat them. Cigars and pipes are awesome!
