Mrs. Rat and I are wanting to leave the kids with a family member (I'll believe that when she actually does it) and escape for a weekend. Trouble is we don't know where to go.
I love the Smokey Mountains but that's too far to drive for a weekend. She loves the Florida beaches (also too far). I was thinking maybe Chattanoga but we've both been there a couple of times.
Any suggestions?

Are we talking motel, camping, cabins, or RV's? Nature or uptown?

If 6 hrs is not too far for ya (is for me for a weekend) Biloxi is a beautiful place on the beaches. If she likes the water there is a grand water park in Decatur AL called Point Mallard. Great place to relax. The place we always go (and hear me out, cause it don't sound like much, but we enjoy it) is downtown Memphis. We get on the net and go to priceline.com and get a good deal on a 4-star hotel (usually The Marriott) which is a vacation in itself. From there we can take the train all around town, doing it night and seeing the lights on the river is amazing. There is Joe's Crab Shack and numerous restuarants you can get off and on the train or a park, or Mud Island, or just walk up town. Then at night, after a nice dinner on Beale St., we listen to the bands and relax. It makes for a very nice inexpensive vacation and I love it, and it's also close enough the ride didn't kill me.

Tunica is always my weekend getaway. I'm not a big gambler but I always have coupons for free or discounted hotel stays and plus there's always cheap food too. (2.99 Steak & Eggs at Fitzgeralds)
We like to look around at the various casinos, especially the movie memorabilia at Hollywood Casino. We also sometimes run up to Memphis and hang out and do some shopping/sightseeing.

If you prefer a camping type situation, check out dismals canyon in northwest alabama. BEAUTIFUL scenery and they have several options as far as camping, cabins, etc. After you hike a bit, the natural swimming pool is a nice 67 degrees. =D It's about an hour and a half from Tupelo... www.dismalscanyon.com/

I went to Atlantic City once and spent $20 in the slots. All those old people in there spending their social security checks was depressing. Biloxi? I heard on the radio yesterday that it is covered with toxic waste churned up out of the gulf (been there since the years when MS dumped raw sewage in the rivers) and people are getting sick all over the place. Now this canyon thing sounds pretty intersting, though. I'll check it out. Last week I was in Montgomery (business) and a guy down there told me there was a really neat "mini grand canyon" in Fort Payne. ........ <pause to check out your link> The Dismal canyon looks great. Just my cup of tea. I think my wife will like it, too. Thanks.
