Three Imams (muslim clerics) prayed loudly and shouted "Allah" repeatedly as passengers were boarding a US Airways flight to Pheonix this week. Then they boarded the plane and switched from their assigned seats - taking seats at the front of the plane (First Class) and at the rear. Their actions were consistent with how the 9-11 hijackers acted, according to law enforcement officials. So the pilot threw them off the plane.
Now they are planning to sue the airline saying their civil rights were violoated.
According to a report I saw this morning on Fox News, this is likely a stunt by the terrorists to get a federal judge to hamstring a pilot's ability to eject suspected terrorists from an airplane. Or to scare the airline away from such action by threat of a lawsuit.
And you can bet there will be a throng of American lawyers crawling all over each other trying to take the case. I wouldn't doubt if the ACLU jumps in on this as a "freedom of religion" fight.
Here are some early comments on the incident:
Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, called removing the imams an act of Islamophobia and compared it to racism against blacks.
"It's a shame that as an African-American and a Muslim I have the double whammy of having to worry about driving while black and flying while Muslim," Mr. Bray said.
The protesters also called on Congress to pass legislation to outlaw passenger profiling.
Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, Texas Democrat, said the September 11 terrorist attacks "cannot be permitted to be used to justify racial profiling, harassment and discrimination of Muslim and Arab Americans."
"Understandably, the imams felt profiled, humiliated, and discriminated against by their treatment," she said.
