Some parents just don't care what their kids do. So society can either allow the kids to attend school, do drugs and disrupt the learning process for the good kids or it can kick the kid out of school where he will almost certainly end up dead or in prison. Or, society could identify these kids, drug test them, and put them into some type of rehab program to get them off the drugs. Look, I am all for parental rights and I think DHS does about as much wrong as it does right but a parent's rights should end once they have abused or neglected their child. Now, that I agree with. Identify those kids, not random drug testing on kids who are not troublemakers, or the poor, or the shy. Everybody at school knows who those kids are, their reputations follow them. Only drag those good-for-nothing parents who are dope-heads and drunks into the school and make sure they know what their kid is doing. Most of the time these kids nowdays get these myspace or Xanga sites and tell all about what they do anyways. They even put their pics on these spaces and tell about how they get drunk or high. They ain't got no sense I 'spose. myspace was the downfall of my neighbors child. She didn't think her mother knew how to look it up. Thanks to others in the neighborhood the mother took a crash course about online sites and the girl has now been "busted" But you are right most parents don't look at sites their children are visiting. I moniter everything that goes thru my computer everyday. Especially after I found out that the 16 year old gets online in the middle of the night. His friends text him and on he hops. That has stopped too so far. But I will keep an eye on him.

You know if the DHS is so concerned why didn't they get those kids in Kansas before they went without food for so long. That case made me sick to my stomach. The step-mother not feeding them for so long and you know the daddy had to notice that they were skin and bones when he is home. When that policeman said they hoped to be fed this weekend, after not eating for at least 6 days and no water for three made me want to do harm to the step-mother.

Doesn't it seem like the system (whether it is DHS or the judicial system) has a habit of ignoring the really bad situations while going after the minor things or the totally innocent? I've known cases where parents beat their kids and DHS would go talk to the parents and tell them who reported them then do nothing. I know a guy who has been arrested for drug possession several times (even while on probation), several times for beating his wife, and at least once for assaulting someone else. Yet he is still walking the streets. It just seems like the cops just get tired of arresting those people and focus on everyone else.
Or is that just my perception?

Hi, this is my first post. IMO- I'am all for drug testing, I personally think it is a great idea. As long as it stays Equal and goe's for all Group's in the school. When I went to the TPS I hung-out with all group's got along with everyone. And the biggest drug group, was the Rich kid's. You know the Jock's, the Prep's, the Kid's who had parent's with Power. And never got in trouble over drugs, even though they were caught. I'm not one to judge people, but it only seem's fair that the Rule's go for All. And it should be that way, but it isn't. Only the Poor kid's and the Undesireable's get the Test's. Sad but True........... Thank You for listening to me ramble, it's just my Opinion. BYE

I'm going to disagree with the drug testing proposal. It is just another way for some to condemn the schools. Of course, that is going to happen either way regarding the drug issues.
There are a lot of topics where people say that is not the job of schools, that is the job of parents. WE AGREE! However, not everyone is doing their job which leaves those of us who are to pick up the slack.
Just another catch 22
