Here's one web site that has a lot of information about biodiesel and other alternative energies. It's got a lot of tree hugger hippie blah-blah, but biodiesel takes care of that! journeytoforever.org/biofuel.html
I also read a good article in Maxim magazine, March, 2005, Issue # 87. I learned that Rudolph Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine ran his first engine on peanut oil in 1900. I guess crude was more plentiful, so they made diesel fuel out of crude instead of vegetable oil. As an aside, electric cars were more powerful than their internal combustion counterparts at the time, but it was hard to charge them. Imagine if they had developed those technologies instead of gasoline and diesel! Batteries in my PDA would probably last a lot longer than two weeks. I bet the state of electronics would have been more advanced, since the power supply and problems attributed with power supplies are the major drawback to electronics technology.
Mmmkay, here's some web sites and companies they mentioned in the article.
www.joshuatickell.com
Tickell publishes a book called "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank" and builds a kit so you can make your own biodiesel as easy as mixing a cake. The completely automated biodiesel maker costs about $3000. You just pour in the measured ingredients at the right time, just like a bread machine. It can make 40 gallons a day.
On the other hand, Maria Alovert, aka Girl Mark,(http://www.localb100.com/) sells plans for a "more involved" biodiesel maker built from scrap using an old water heater for $200. She says that Tickell got most of his ideas from a documentary called "The Fat of the Land".
There's another option, to modify your diesel engine to run straight vegetable oil, it's called Greasecar. greasecar.com/ They sell heated fuel cells for cars and heated fuel tanks for trucks and you can use fresh or used vegetable oil. Most restaurants and stores will give you all the oil you want, they have to pay by the pound or gallon to dispose of it, the more they give you, the less they have to pay.
I remember seeing a Volkswagen rabbit that ran on french fry grease on the TV show, "Real People" years ago, but I was afraid that OPEC had snuffed the inventor, good thing I was wrong! ;D I bet the inventor of the mythical 100 mpg carb would be buried next to him. ;D
