We were talking about Berkey water filters the other night in chat. There are two kinds of water filters: pressurized and gravity fed. The pressurized ones are the more common ones that are piped in line with your water pipes or under your counter, they filter the water at either the water source or at the tap. Catadyne and Pur are two examples. Gravity fed are different, they require you to fill them up and the water soaks through a filter. The Brita water pitchers and British Berkefields work that way. Gravity fed filters are used in areas where they don't have electricity. Berkeys are robust enough to take pond water and make it potable. They use ceramic bodied filters that can be cleaned and reused 100 times, they can process 1000 gallons or more before they need cleaning. They've been used for more than 150 years to make water potable. www.doultonfilters.com/Most of the good filters use activated charcoal to absorb chemicals. One day my wife and I are going to attend our church's "Clean Water University" and learn how to make a bulk water filter for a third world area and go somewhere to set one up for a village.
