I bought the DVD, I have watched it twice. Everything I said in my review for the Film goes double for the DVD.
If you haven't seen it, get it! My review from the film follows below:
"This movie was spectacular. You see, I really try to put myself into the shoes of a protagonist when I see a movie. To me, movies are experiences, that I WANT to feel.
Tom Cruise's character, Ray, was a hard character to get a feel for. You see, he's the high school football all-american jock. He got the cheerleader, married her, had a couple of kids, and then she realized that while he has good looks, he still wants to be that sometimes jerk, sometimes, romantic that so many high school students never seem to leave behind.
I was floored by Dakota Fannings performance. When she freaks out, she freaks out BIG TIME! You cannot help but feel sorry for her as she sits with Ray on an old tattered couch in a crumbling home with the military trying to blow the invaders away just outside the window. Ray sings her the only lullaby he knows, Little Deuce Coup....touching, and stays true the character.
The special effects were mesmerizing and I can definitely feel the Spielberg of old as he takes his time showing the "monster" off to the audience. This is Spielberg circa Jaws, ET, and Close Encounters.
I had goosebumps as tall as the Empire State Building when the machines started using their energy beam. That sound, that low bass, gut busting sound that turns flesh into ash as it hits..... When Ray is running through the street and people are exploding into ash all around him, and their clothes went flying into the air, that was some serious science fiction going on.
I could talk about this movie for another thirty minutes, but I won't don't want to spoil anymore. This movie is easily the best movie out this summer. It absolutely blew me away, and I will own it on DVD. My home theater is looking for another killer movie, and between this and Batman Begins it will get it's workout this Christmas!
In short, 9.5 out of 10.
