I wish someone would give Wal-Mart a little competition. Thank goodness, I can drive to Dollar General now to get milk. I wonder if Fred's is trying to compete with Wal-Mart or with Dollar General?

lfwisener, I noticed that too. How do you like the way they have arranged the store? It is laid out like Wal-mart now too.

I haven't been in Fred's for years. The last time I was in one...the prices were still higher than Wal-Mart prices. How are the prices now?

A lot of them are still higher than Wal-Mart but some are getting to be about the same. I run in there for washing liquid and such and it is about the same. Sometimes they have good sales if you are looking for one item. Ours is right beside Save-A-Lot so it sees more business I would think than other Fred's that is stuck by itself or by other discount stores.

Wal-mart has gotten too big for a lot of people. I "like" going there for certain things, but I'm going less often.
Dollar General and Fred's have found their niche, they are catering to people that don't feel like taking a quest to shop at Walmart, fighting crowds and traffic.
I like getting my groceries at Kroger at Barnes Crossing, but when I take my son to Saltillo for his speech therapy, I go to Food Giant to get good meat at a great price. Their ground chuck is about 30 cents cheaper than Kroger.
A funny thing, Walmart, K-Mart, Howard's, and Fred's all started the same year in 1962. Howards's is gone, K-mart teamed up with Sear's. Fred's is the only one strong enough, or smart enough to rebound and Dollar General is also thriving.

There's a Food Giant in Saltillo on Mobile St. at the railroad tracks. I think they put their ads in the Daily Journal on Wednesdays so you can check out their deals. It's a nice little grocery store, they don't have everything Kroger has, but they have good meat.

I'll have to go check it out. I usually shop in Pontotoc but I'm always looking for good meat.

I personally like Fred's in Saltillo. To me, their prices aren't any worse than Wal-Mart. It just all depends on what you go there to buy. I like to buy my Laundry Detergent, Tolietries, etc. there. Some items they have & some they don't. I Hate going to Wal-Mart. You have to drive around for a half hour looking for a parking place. BSIBetterHalf ;D
