Gee, I wonder who the next Deputy Chief will be? Hmmmm.... I'm hedging my bets on Ronnie Thomas.

Well...well, what was onlya blurb on WTVA the other day now has much more detail!
from Friday, Aug 11, 2006 Daily Journal
TUPELO - Officials of the Lee County Chapter of the NAACP are scheduled to meet with the Tupelo City Council on Tuesday to discuss the demotion of police Capt. Robert Hall.
The organization's acting president, the Rev. Robert Jamison, met with about 10 people Thursday to discuss Hall's demotion from deputy police chief last week.
Jamison said the action was unwarranted and that department jealously ultimately led to the action.
"I don't believe Robert got a fair shake," said Jamison. "He is one of the best police officers in the country and I don't think he would jeopardize his career to help someone else. Hall was a marked man and still is a marked man."
Jamison said the NAACP will request another investigation into the incident and would like the council to be involved.
A recent state Attorney General's report said Hall helped a friend avoid a DUI charge.
Ward 4 Councilman Nettie Davis, who attended the meeting, said Hall should have been given more than one strike because everyone deserves a second chance.
"We don't have many blacks in key positions in Tupelo and Robert is a great police officer," said Davis.

I have been behind Robert since day one, and supported him in his decision, but it upsets me that he is playing the "race card." If he is going to fight, (and he should) he should play fair and not play dirty pool.

A recent state Attorney General's report said Hall helped a friend avoid a DUI charge. TF IF the report is true.. then hall is lucky to have a job at all, he should be happy to still have a good job with a demotion. some officers would lose their job over the same thing... while some officers would have never even gotten a demotion. personally, i'd have fired him (or anyone else) IF he was trying to change police reports to protect a friend. again, IF. i wasn't there and won't pass a lot of judgement on this.

So far I've heard, he avoided giving a church member a DUI and that he changed records? I was under the impression that he didn't give a DUI but still charged the man with hit and run. It doesn't matter what color he is, so I really don't know why the race card is being brought into it at this late date.

I heard from a former TPD employee that the incident in which he helped someone get out of a DUI stemmed from the hit and run in which someone was killed on Green Street or McCullough (I don't remember which) If this is the case, then he should not have a job at all. I am not playing the "race" card, but if it were someone else, (maybe with a little lower job title), they would have lost their job.

momof3, no one was killed in this particular incident. That much is 100% true.

What is their reason for re-opening the case?

they didn't say, but my guess is that someone is putting pressure on them, someone who didn't want Hall reinstated period. My beef is that Hall did not do anything that every officer has done at one time or another. If you are gonna go after one of them, get them all.

What is their reason for re-opening the case? the naacp has been putting pressure on the case. hood has now said there's new evidence... or something along those lines. new evidence??? seems like some crappy investigating the first time around. this whole thing was "hush hush", then the AG makes a decision, now the AG wants to look at it again. it's become a circus... and i'm not surprised. one of two things have happened. either 1. hood/young rushed the investigation and made the wrong decision or 2. hood/young are folding under pressure from the naacp. if the right decision was made... by gosh stand behind it!

Well...I don't know any of the players in this game, but for me I think the decision should stay as it is right now. He didn't do anything some other cop hasn't done so why should it ruin his life?

My beef is that Hall did not do anything that every officer has done at one time or another. you and PM both said that (basically). so... it's ok for a cop to break the law if other cops are breaking the law? i think a fair decision was made the first time (from what little we know). hall did something he shouldn't, he got demoted. hall has a good record up to this point... he got a second chance. seems pretty fair to me. acting like what he did was OK... um, no. i don't think his "life should be ruined" but i'm dang sure against him having NO repercussions. again, IF he tried to help cover up a DUI by changing reports, etc.
