what is going on at the Police Department?

It seems that almost daily, something is coming out of the Police Department that looks and sounds as if the worst things imaginable are occuring and then being covered up by the Department.
A few years ago, there was talk of establishing a Citizen Review Board to review incidents that occured that might indicate wrong doing within the Department.
At the time, the Chief (Crider, I believe...) was able to defeat the proposal.
It now appears that they have lost the ability to Police themselves (if they ever had it...) and I am appalled at some of the things I am told are going on there.
There are some fine Officers there but there are also some that have been placed in Supervisory or Leadership positions that have been promoted to at least three levels of their highest level of incompetence.
No names here, if you follow the digression of the Department you know who they are.
I am the first one to say that not all things that occur at the Department should be public knowledge. If the SWAT team makes a dynamic entry and the drug dealer is treated a bit roughly, who cares?!
However, some of the things happening now do need to be made public knowledge and corrective measures taken immediately. If the problem is a lack of leadership then fix it. If replacement personell are needed then bring them in from outside the Department or the problems that exist now will simply be continued because of personal relationships developed over a long period of time working together.
If citizens here had the opportunity to visit Police agencies in other cities the size of Tupelo they would be ashamed of what we are exibiting at this time.
It is time to begin to fix the problems at the Department and it needs to addressed by the Council in the glaring light of honesty instead of the shadow it is now casting.

crow: mototcop, I could not agree more. What goes on in that department is a shame on this entire state. But you and I or anyone else, who thinks the council will shine any light on it, is bad wrong. The blue wall of silence is alive and well, but of corse there is no such thing as the blue wall of silence, YAH RIGHT! Tupelo's City Court is another corrupt department in this city, a judge hired through the police department, staffed by tupelo police, and paid through the police department, a judge who is going to do just what the police tells him to. But it has always been so, at least for the 68 years i've been in tupelo. But we can't really blame the council, after all we elected them, and a mayor who is somewhat prone to (shall we say) the tipsy side of life.

Dan Davis is/was the judge in Tupelo, and I promise you, that man cannot be bought off by anyone. He is too moral and ethical of a man. Now, Carroll White, I would tend to agree with you.

Hi crow...glad you decided to join our little corner of cyberspace. There's a couple of things in your post I'd like to correct.

First, the police department doees not hire the judge. You must be talking about the Court Director. He is not a judge, he merely runs the court, and yes, he was an officer with the Police Department. The bailiffs are paid by the Municipal Court not the Police Department, they are police officers and have police powers, but the court pays them to perform Court duties.

And I believe there are two Municpal Judges, neither were hired by the Police Department. I'm not sure what the process is, election or adoption...heh, but they are not hired by the PD.

As many of you know, I worked for the PD for almost 6 years, and love law enforcement, regardless of anything that happened at the end of my employment, I was proud to work for and with many of the fine officers there.....Now, as far as all this stuff flying around about the department regarding shootings, and probationary officers, and coverups, and all that....I certainly hope it's not true. I hope it's not true for all the officers I know who are out there trying to make a living and do a good job. They are the ones who would get hurt by anything like that....and believe me when I say that their are a lot of great officers that work for the City. If it is true, then we need some official accounting for all this, and either prove or disprove all these rumors.

I think we can put one theory to bed, the officer did not drop his duty weapon as someone suggested at the djournal. Motorcop pointed it out, but on Glock's web page they have a trigger, firing pin, and drop safety system that makes the chances of the gun firing when dropped impossible! You must pull the trigger for the weapon to fire...period. If you need more info....see...

Hello TF Admin, maybe things have changed at Tupelo's City Court between Judge Hutchinson's time and now, but I doubt it has changed much. But I not having any business or being a visitor of that somewhat questionable department of government, I shall defer to your assessment.
