Curious if anyone out there is using a linux based firewall/router/content filter out there, and which one you are using.
I put a ClarkConnect box in at our house (we have comcast btw) and its been working beatifully. We get virtually no pop-ups and it has stopped adware apps cold. Its also cut down on all the port scans etc across the net. But, there are others out there, like IPCop and I was wondering if you might have tried it and clarkconnect to see which you thought did better.
TIA,

Like most people, I am just using a Linksys WRT54G with Comcast. I am a total Linux newb, but have been thinking about going the route you mentioned. For a total newb like myself, what are the questions I should be asking and whatpitfalls should I know about before putting together a Linux firewall?

well, the main question is what all do you want it to do other than being a basic router/firewall? and, do you have an extra machine laying around to use for your firewall? I wanted Intrusion Detection and Prevention, plus I wanted Dynamic DNS info so I could VPN back to home from work. All I have to do is login to ClarkConnect's website www.clarkconnect.org and look at my clarkbox. From there it tells me what the IP address is and I can VPN to that addy. I also wanted to block the ads as well as have a content filter. It does great in both and its easy to add sites to an exempt list. I can also block file extentions etc... from being downloaded. The content filter is great because I can keep our guests in check when they come to visit. The linux boxes don't do wireless as well as the routers do, so I kept my dlink wireless router. I just set it as a gateway instead of a router. So, you'll want to keep a wireless router because if you don't, you'll be setting up an ad-hoc network. It all comes down to what you want. themetermcse
