OK...let me set this up for you:
If you have been driving down HWY 45 through Saltillo, you probably noticed the Gigantic Water Tank getting sandblasted. I assume they are going to repaint, if they have not done so already.
Anyway, two weeks ago, I had a discussion with the Foreman doing the work there. He told me about how the whole sandblasting process works and then pointed to a large pile of sand and muck in front of the tank. He said that muck was what was inside the tank.
Now, I don't know if I told my story of TFADMIN versus North Lee Water Association, but let me sum that up before continuing my story. I learned from this previous battle that drinking water is just nasty. I mean the chemicals, and critters, and just sick, sick stuff that is in our water is horrid, and no one really cares! If you dump enough chemicals into the system, it will kill the bad things, but don't you worry.....none of this stuff will harm you! Oh NO! This water is safe to drink. Yes, it's yellow and brown, and looks like your toilet after eating bad mexican food, but hey....it's safe to drink.
After being told that numerous times, my wife and I bought a $5,000 whole house filtration system that made our water drinkable...it was worth every penny, but I moved, and now I drink City water. Guess what? It sucks too!
OK, now back to our story.....So this guy is telling me about what they found inside the tank, and shows me a bag in the back of his truck that weighed well over a hundred pounds....and it was filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny bird beaks.
B-I-R-D B-E-A-K-S! You see, these huge water tanks (Tripods as Wittzo and I call them) are just huge chemical filtering systems for the decomposition of birds. Well....they are more than that, but it seems that they often have trap doors near the top. The wind blows hard and the door opens, and birds have a tendency to fly inside the open door and build nests in the tank. Somebody comes along and shuts the door....birds have no where to go, but in the tank and die.
That's when science takes over! You see all those wonderful chemicals they scorch our water with, breaks down the birds body (feathers, eyes, wings, etc) except for beaks and talons. That stuff gets trapped in the muck, and settles at the bottom of the tank....MMMMM YUM! Think of it as spices or seasoning....yes, we are drinking bird seasoned water. ME WANTY!
The image of thousands of tiny beaks is still burned in my brain. No one thought bottled water would ever take off, but now, I can't imagine drinking water out of a tap ever again.
