Bush is set to veto a bill which would expand the federal government's role in stem cell research.
Do you think stem cell research should be allowed? Embraced?
Should our tax money pay for it? Or is there already enough research ongoing?
I'm not set in stone. I don't oppose the research itself, as Bush seems to, but I wonder if it is smart to throw our tax dollars after it. My limited understanding of it is that more isn't necessarily better and that a LOT of the claims surrounding it are hype - that it is being hailed as a cure-all.
Sometimes I feel that scientists make up illnesses and crisis situations just to get more research money. Like global warming (which is a myth) bound to destroy the world. When I was a kid the crisis was that the sun was burning itself out. Then there were these huge metorites headed for earth. A few years ago West Nile Virus was going to kill us all. Last year it was Bird Flu. Next year they will make up something else.
I am a survivor. Against all odds I have not been stung to death by killer bees from Africa that scientists claimed were unstoppable and were supposed to have already taken over the southern states.

What a muddy issue you have brought up KR. I have some personal feelings about stem cell research. I don't agree with killing babies to get the cells for rsearch; however, I do agree with saving Cord Blood when babies are born, either by the parents for private banking, or the hospital for public research.
I don't understand why researchers, lobbyists, and Congress don't look closer at just mandating hospitals keep all Cord Blood and send it to a public bank for research. If a parent wants to privately bank, then they pay for it and bank it, like we did.
I look at it as an insurance policy. I pay a yearly fee to keep my daughter's stem cells banked, and if she, or I, or my wife ever needed it, it's there for use. We got a 95 percent chance it will work with us, so I'd say $99 dollars a year to bank it is CHEAP insurance considering the progress they are making.
The whole killing fetuses has muddied this extremely important issue up. If only they would use Cord Blood, which is normally thrown away.

I wish more people felt as you did TF. The mandatory collection of cord blood at birth would solve a lot of problems and no one has to die for it, and it's something that is going to be discarded anyway and could save lives and research could carry on. I highly doubt anyone would be opposed to stem cell research if it was done in this manner. The problem with parents doing it that I see is lack of knowledge and the cost. More docs should explain the benefits of it while expecting. I wouldn't mind tax dollars used for it if it saves lives
