This is not front page news; it was probably overlooked by many! The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize this year was Muhammad Yunus and his foundation, the Grameen Bank. In 1976, Yunus, an economist who graduated from Vanderbilt, helped a group of poor women in Bangladesh by giving them $27 so they could buy bamboo to make furniture and make a living. Since then, his foundation has given small loans, usually $300 or less, to mostly women in undeveloped areas of the world, enabling these enterprising ladies to pull themselves and their families out of poverty. When I read that $300 was the amount it takes to give certain people the ability to get out of poverty, it really made me of what I do with my money in any given month... I really should be ashamed.
