The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize this year was Muhammad Yunus and his foundation, the Grameen Bank.
In 1976, Yunus, an economist who graduated from Vanderbilt, helped a group of poor women in Bangladesh by giving them $27 so they could buy bamboo to make furniture and make a living. Since then, his foundation has given small loans, usually $300 or less, to mostly women in undeveloped areas of the world, enabling these enterprising ladies to pull themselves and their families out of poverty.
When I read that $300 was the amount it takes to give certain people the ability to get out of poverty, it really made me of what I do with my money in any given month... I really should be ashamed.
