Has anyone seen Governor Barbour's new commercial promoting walking? I do not know about everyone else, but I do not think I would listen to him! I am very glad he is advertising a healthy lifestyle; however, I do have to wonder if he is following his own advice ;D www.letsgowalkinms.comAnother thing I wonder about this is the website url... Is it "Let's go walk IN Mississippi" or "Let's go walkIN, Mississippi." Being from the South, one has to wonder...

I wondered that myself but this past weekend on WCBI they said our governor has lost 15 lb by walking 30 minutes a day 4 times per week. They interviewed him and he said he was amazed how effective walking was and just wanted to get the word out. BCBS is sponsering the ads.
So, yes, I would say the pudgy governor is following his own advice but still has a few walks to go.

So I finally watched the end of the commercial... It is "Let's go walkin, Mississippi." Oh, the grammar!

I won't speak for mustangfan, but my main gripe is that he has not been able to get a handle on the Dept. of Education. Why in the hell do we need so many overpaid School Superintendants? Example....We have a couple, mainly in the Delta counties that get paid over $60,000 with less than 100 students and 2 schools to oversee. Massive waste of money.

i'll tell you, i think it was a bunch of empty promises. he did a lot of finger pointing at musgrove about how this state lost jobs. the funny thing is though at that time the economy all across the country was doing bad and since he took office it seems that the state has lost more jobs. i do feel though that the economy won't improve unless the state can do a major slowdown of the high school drop out rate.

You both have good points, TF & MF, but what really can the governor do about those things? Until Mississippi wakes up and turns out our corrupt legislature we will never get out of the dark ages.
Two things have impressed me about him:
1) He stood up to the legislature and the LT Governor over the bogus grocery tax scam even though it will likely cost him re-election. Can you imagine the commercials we'll see proclaiming that he opposed lowering the grocery tax. And all those people who don't understand why he did it?
2) He stood up to the legislature and to Mike Moore and put an end to Moore's private slush fund of $20 million per year from our pockets (indirectly, since he got the money before it reached our general fund). That, IMO, was a pure and simple case of a judge overstepping her bounds and funneling money to someone's private pocket. It is not up to judges to appropriate state funds for any project.
Could he have done more? Probably - I don't know. But expecting him to just blow in a fix education when we have a legislature that will oppose anything he tries to do is a bit far-fetched, IMO. What he is doing, though, is putting something like $180 million MORE into education since we now have all that Katrina money. Personally, though, until the education system is fixed I think additional money is just a waste.
But, yes, I would like to see him screaming "consolidation" every time he steps in front of a microphone.

TF TF...You hit the nail on the head with this. Mississippi has some SERIOUSLY overpaid superintendents. It really makes me angry that, on a daily basis, I oversee almost 140 students. I am a highly qualified teacher ("No Child Left Behind" crap) of five classes of English, I have one study hall (this is an actual study hall where I tutor in all subjects), and I have ONE FIFTY MINUTE BREAK which is not really a break since I work during it also. I have a 25 minute lunch in the cafeteria with 150 to 200 yelling students to watch. A superintendent does not have a day like mine. I do not make $90,000.00 a year; I do not even want to. I just want to eat lunch in peace. Hey...I started this thread about a commercial. How did we end up on this?
