You're welcome, Crimson. Just thought I would put up a rational viewpoint on this issue.

I called the humane society today to see what I needed to do to register my dog. Why the hell does it cost 50 dollars for me to fill out a form, show my id and walk out? This doesn't make sense to me. I did find out though that the 'if you already own one' part of the new law is /ONLY/ if your dog is registered. They find an unregistered pitbull (even if it's properly restrained) they're going to take it with no questions asked.

What a load of crap!!!! Sounds like a scheme to make money off of hard working honest folks in Tupelo for no other reason than "just because they can"!!! I live in the county but travel to Tupelo with my dogs often. I take them to the vet for shots or to friends and relatives to visit or maybe a nice stroll in the park (on a leash) and it had better be one bad ass animal control officer if he thinks that he will just take my dogs without question. DO NOT mess with my family!!! I get highly irritated about things such as that. Call me anti-authoritarian if you want but right is right and wrong is sometimes REALLY wrong.

I agree with ya about the Ban. And our Pet's can and are like our Kid's, Our Family. I don't have a Pit-Bull, I've got a "Toy Rat-Terrior" and is Spoiled Rotten. Love's to go Bye Bye. For the rest of ya, here's another reason for YOUR BAN.

Close Calls with Pit Bulldogs is Cause for Concern TheTupelo City Council is set to vote on an ordinance Tuesday night that would ban pit bulldogs from inside the city limits.
Those who already own pit bulls would not be affected, but still must obey strict laws to restrain the animals.
Animal control officers cite recent close calls with pit bulls as examples why changes are needed.
One animal control officer says his job has gone beyond just keeping animals under control in the tupelo city limits, it's become very dangerous.
Thomas Shifflet says he and a police officer were almost attacked friday evening by a pit bulldog as he was trying to stop it from attacking a smaller dog. "As I was grabbing the mangled dog to save it to carry it to the animal center, the pit bull jumped up to attack me, as he was attacking me, the officer had to shoot the dog."
He also says because of his job he was shot at Sunday night while leaving his church in a neighborhood where he's been investigating pit bull owners. "That's putting our lives in danger, so we need to try to resolve this."
He says pit bull owners should register their animals with the humane society and make certain they are properly restrained.
Lana Richardson cares for abandoned dogs and once owned a pit bull. She says owners should be more responsible.
"I would naturally give up the right to ever have a pit bull even though i did have one and she was calm as she could be, i think they make them too mean, they abuse them so bad."
ChickitaPerkins, her mom and son often go walking in their neighborhood where there are pit bull owners she worries for them and others.
"Cause this neighborhood has a lot of kids playing in the yards and around, it's dangerous for the dogs to be wandering and catch the kids off guard."
She does think if properly restrained though, the dogs should not be banned from the city. "It's not that we're against the pit bulls, we're trying to save them a lot of trouble, if they're properly confined they can't get out, they don't have a lawsuit, people don't get hurt. For me, myself, I want to be safe, my job is to help these animals."www.wtva.com/cgi/display2.pl?view=news_story-3Hmmm I myself, have A LOT of thoughts on this article. I don't think they would be appropriate for public consumption though, so I will just keep them to myself.

Yes, peasNcarrots, Petey was a pit bull in The Little Rascals. Other famous pit bulls include: Stubby-a WWI decorated canine war hero. This stray Pit Bull, of unknown descent, was found by Private John Robert Conroy on the campus of Yale University, in 1917, while Conroy was training for deployment to the European front of WWI. During the course of his stay at the camp with Pvt. Conroy, Stubby became familiar with all of the bugle calls, the drill marching routines, and even learned to give a dog's version of a salute. He would put his right paw on his right eyebrow when a salute was executed by others around him. Stubby's ability to salute struck a chord with the training camp commander and the dog was granted permission to remain with Private Conroy. Stubby, along with Pvt. Conroy eventually traveled to the front lines with the 102nd Infantry Division. While serving overseas, Stubby was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy. The commander of the 102nd used this last act of bravery to put Stubby in for a promotion to the ranks of the Noncommissioned Officers by awarding him the rank of Sergeant. He became the first 'Pit Bull' to be given rank in the United States Armed Forces. Sgt. Stubby served in 17 battles during his stay in Europe....Weela a 'Pit Bull' was named Ken-L-Rations dog hero for 1993. She saved 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses and a cat during heavy floods. Reader's Digest did a story on the hero dog but REFUSED to print Weela's breed in the article.....RCA-Alaska"s first certified hearing dog. RCA is 15 years old and in quite good health, considering her advanced years. She came to Alaska from Alabama. Because the housing market was tight and there was pit bull-hysteria in the air, her owners couldn't find a place to rent that would allow pit bulls and she was eventually sent to the Alaska SPCA in Anchorage. At that time a man named John Ledum, was trying to start a hearing-dog program in Alaska. He and a local veterinarian, Dr. Joyce Murphy, temperament-tested 170 dogs and RCA scored the highest, so she was chosen to be the first certified hearing dog in Alaska.....Sir Thomas who belonged to Helen Keller.......Laura Ingalls Wilder owned a pit and so did Theodore Roosevelt.......A pit bull is the ONLY breed to grace the cover of Life magazine THREE times.... Buster Brown Shoe Co. and RCA used the breed as their mascots...And my personal favorite is the story of Popsicle- During an arrest in 1997, Buffalo policeman Ron Clark Jr. opened an abandoned freezer on a known drug dealer's back porch and found a near-death puppy in a black bag that the world would soon come to know as Popsicle. The puppy was in very bad shape when he got to the shelter but through shear determination made a great recovery. Because of the breed's reputation nobody would adopt him. The shelter thought it was a long shot but they contacted US customs canine-enforcement officer Sally Barr. Maybe he could qualify for dog training at Front Royal, VA. Of 500 dogs Barr had tested in the previous 3 years, only 4 have made the cut. Popsicle graduated at the top of his class in 1998 and two months later he detected 3,075 pounds of cocaine at the US-Mexico border in a pineapple laden truck. It was the largest drug bust in the history of the FDA. This little Pit bull puppy grew up to help arrest the same kind of drug dealers that tried to kill him... What a great ambassador for the breed!!!!!

Woot! I just watched the council meeting on TV. The pitball ordiance was tabled until sufficient research can be done. Several people, four in total, testified on behalf of dogs and all of them said that the problem was with people not with the breed. Score one for us.

I don't have a pitt bull, my neighbor has two. As most of you know I'm over run with children, I do not fear for their safety. The dogs are well trained and properly supervised. I do own two rotts, they are well trained (better than the kids) and are always supervised outside. I think pet owners are responsible to keep their pets under control at all times. We take our dogs to town, they walk with us (on a leash too) they go on trips with us. So I do not support a ban on a bread of animal. A german shepard bites more people than any other breed. And we have one of those too. And yes he has bitten someone before. But it was in my yard, on my porch, and it also was a brother I was a little teed off at the time so all I did was call him back to me. And told my brother that the dog must not like you.

I Agree MOM, it's our Responceability(?) for our Animal's. And alot of the time people seems to forget what a Dog meaning in life IS. That's being a "Protector". Every Dog I've known, thats been loved. Will kill for it's owner (best friend).............................

I am very pleased and a little surprised that the Tupelo council decided to table the matter of the ban until research can be done. Banning the breed IS NOT the answer. Owners of the breed is where All responsibility lies. If a council member reads this, check out the videos on this site sorryagain.com/ If these images don't stir some kind of emotion in your soul, then there is truly no hope for your heartless soul. There is plenty of better ordinances for Tupelo to enforce. Case in point- living directly behind my mother in Tupelo are 2 dogs that are in very poor health. They are both tied on VERY short leads (about 4ft) and cannot do much more than sit and stand in their own excrement. Only one has a doghouse (which I donated to them awhile back when they had another dog, but it soon died from neglect) the other dog has only a small shrub to crawl under for shelter. My mom tried to care for the dogs openly but because of broken neighbor relations (they got pissed that my Mom said that she had called the Humane society about their dogs) she now secretly takes them food and water. My Mom is the only reason that these dogs are still alive. She cannot go over there as she needs to for fear of getting a trespassing charge. She has built a 6ft wooden fence to keep from seeing the dogs suffer every time she looks across her backyard. How much help has the Tupelo/Lee Humane society been??? NONE ZIP NADA!!!! All a animal control officer has to do is take a look at the dogs and they would see that there is a problem. But, IMHO the Tupelo/Lee Humane Society sees no $CASH$ in the situation so therefore it is not a priority. How about this as an idea- Check each and every animal abuse call, give the owner 5 days to correct the situation. If the situation has not been corrected then let the fines start. And if the situation is not corrected within 2 weeks, then the animal is confiscated and the owner is levied one large parting fine which they will have to pay to be able to receive a vehicle tag, added to their property tax if they are a land owner and so on. Animal neglect and abuse is a far bigger problem than the matter of few unfortunate Pit bulls that just happened to end up with stupid, irresponsible, and low-life scumbag owners. That makes a lot better sense to me than charging decent, hardworking, law-abiding citizens $50 to register their family pet which poses no harm other than to the biscuit that happens to drop on the kitchen floor. Just my 2 cents worth...got change for a dollar???
