I How about this as an idea- Check each and every animal abuse call, give the owner 5 days to correct the situation. If the situation has not been corrected then let the fines start. And if the situation is not corrected within 2 weeks, then the animal is confiscated and the owner is levied one large parting fine which they will have to pay to be able to receive a vehicle tag, added to their property tax if they are a land owner and so on. quote] I think 5 days is too lenient. They should be given 24 hours to correct and if the situation is not corrected within 48 hours, the dog should be confiscated. I don't know if any of you have ever watched Animal Planet's show about the ASPCA in New York (can't remember the name of the show), but that's the way they do it. They also have to go to court and pay fines. I think that they should make them go to court and do community service in the Humane Society if they are caught with neglect.

I agree mom. The late sheriff Jack Shirley told me one time that a man that would hurt a dog would hurt a person. I have thought about that and looked at these kinds of people and I tend to agree with him. The laws regarding animals are very lax here, and that should be corrected.

The reason I said 5 days is because i am referring to all animals, not just dogs. Suppose the violation involves a large animal such as a horse, a person needs a little time to rectify problems such as adequate shelter, veterinary care, proper shoeing. problems of this type need more than 24hrs but should be able to be accomplished within 5 days. But community service is another good idea, momof3. There is always trash to be cleaned up around town.

I heard they were delaying it for more research on the radio or tv this morning while getting ready for work. I was SO GLAD to hear they are going to research it further. There are so many much better options than a total ban!

Let's hope they do a better job of "Researching" than they did with the Smoking Ban.

I wholeheartedly agree TF. How about a citywide vote on the matters and let majority rule?

They won't ever do a citywide vote. They think the city council represents us. After watching that last meeting tuesday night... I'm not so sure that's the truth though. They argued back and forth like 5 year olds. Regarding the smoking ban, TF, Austin Texas just ruled theirs as unconstitutional.
What amazed me was that some of them can barely speak english and others can barely read. These are the people that represent us? Not to be rude or insulting but... my three year old son has better grammar and pronunciation than some of them.

I read the story. None of the dogs were restrained. Both adults were at fault for not controlling their pets. I had a labador (and have one now) But our first lab, had no quit to him. If he thougjt I was in danger he would bite. If he was jumped on he would fight. I now raise Rotts. Some people say they are vicious, and you wouldn't find better pets. I have them with the kids, they are around other animals, and different people and they have never attacked. But away from this house we have them on a leash at all times. They go to petsmart, festivals and fishing. But like I said we have them controlled. It is our job, our dogs.

Pontotocmom, you are exercising what is called personal responsibility. I suspect that many folks just do not think it applies to them, thus the laws that are passed penalizing everybody for the ones who will not take personal responsibility.

Leash laws on the Waterway state that all dogs must be kept on a six-foot leash at all times, but Wright claimed to be unaware of these laws.
Oh so that excuses him from all fault? Bullcrap.
This is clearly a case of two owners not thinking and wanting to shove the blame off on each other. They need to work this out on their own as far as vet bills and money. Why should everyone else have to get in trouble just because two jerk offs couldn't come to an agreement and didn't behave like responsible owners?

The owner of the Lab was at fault. The owner of the 2 Pits was at fault. ANY dog in a public setting should be restrained. This will prevent any unfortunate events from occurring. I take my 3 Pits out and let them run loose in a field very far from public view. I own a 4x4 and can get far enough away from civilization that there will be NO possible incident as described in the article. That is the only setting that my dogs are allowed to run and play freely. Sounds like this Wright fellow is just upset at the fact that his dog was involved in a dog fight as a direct result of his own irresponsibility. I wonder if he would still be on this anti-Pit Bull crusade if his Lab had of jumped out of the truck and ran up on 2 restrained Pit Bulls and gotten into a fight? My guess is that he would still blame the Pits because they are historically a fighting breed. If anything, he won't be going back to the waterway with his Lab unrestrained. Some lessons in life are learned the hard way. Also, I wonder if Mr. Wright would be willing and happy to fork over upwards of a $1000 if his Lab had of jumped out of his truck and killed some little old lady's prize winning, registered Pomeranian. My guess would be NO!

I had a friend pass this video along to me. She doesn't even live here or know about the possible ban...talk about a coincidence. Anyway the video moved me to tears and I will warn you IT IS NOT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART. There are few piuctures that very graphic, it is the crule truth to what often happens to pits. If you can get past those images and read the quotes and see the good pictures....oh man what an impression this makes. Too bad nothing like this would ever be shown at a council meeting, it might open some people's eyes. www.pitbullproblem.tk/
