www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=230087&pub=1&div=NewsIn a nutshell, businesses are ALREADY hurting and at least one has closed...as in most other places with a smoking ban...you can expect more. This is hurting Tupelo's small businesses and the fledgling entertainment industry within our city limits. I wonder if Ms. Deas did the research on this as well? Maybe this is chalked up as collateral damage or acceptable losses, after all we would never find any of Tupelo's ELITE at any of the local bars....right? Maybe this is a tactic to drive down alcohol sales, if you drive them down low enough, maybe they can finally pass the Prohibition Act they have so desperately been wanting. We'll make Tupelo completely dry, it's worked so well for other cities...NOT! TF

I wonder what will happen next time the furniture market is in town? Will an exception be made for that great influx of wealthy individuals? Or will they be forced to go outside in the cold or rain and smoke according to Councilwoman Deas' designated safe distance from the front door?
Also, at the Lee County jail, the designated smoking area out front is just around the corner from the front door. Hardly the mandated 25 feet. To move it would mean to put it outside the awning. But shouldn't the sheriff's department be bound by the same laws they are forced to enforce?

Well, KR, the SO does not enforce any CITY ORDINANCES; however, their building is within City Limits, so they too must comply with any goofy ordinance the council passes.

Ok...here is my two cents worth. I can kinda understand the ordinance of not allowing people to smoke in public places where there will be children, however, I do not understand the idea of not allowing smoking in a bar. Here's the thing...in a bar, you usually have two different types of people. The ones who are drinking to just have a good time and the ones who are drinking to get plastered. Now in my Hey Day, when I was known to frequent these types of places, I noticed that a lot of people (me included) would very easily get mad about something stupid and try to get in a fight. These bars would normally have bouncers that would throw you out. Now here's the point, if these people who are drinking and are quick-tempered are asked to go outside to smoke, then they will be fighting in a place that does not have security. This could lead to shootings and stabbings, etc. If Tupelo is going to have bars, (I'm not going there with my opinion), then they should be allowed to smoke inside.
I also think the 25 ft. thing is a little extreme. Especially in places where that's going to put the smokers in the middle of the street.

And if Hall gets caught smoking in a place where Councilwoman Deas doesn't want him smoking would the NAACP rush down and demand that he not be fined because TPD doesn't have enough black officers? And what about all those smokers who will get sick this winter because they have to smoke outside in the cold? I mean, their lungs are already ruined so they would be especially susceptible I would think. Should Councilwoman Deas have to pay for their doctor visit and medicine?

www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=230087&pub=1&div=NewsLet me start by thanking Pro Se from D/U (daily Urinal) for this Link. Now I've been Against this BAN from the Start. BAR's depend on Smoker's, even more than Non-Smoker's. Case proven with the closing of Buster's. Thank's to Dees and her Bunch of Fool's..... IMO Now that Dees and TCC want to control our Life's, I decided to do my own fight against TCC. They want our Tax money, for GAS, BEER, Liquor, CIGERETTE's, Etc. Well since TCC has taken my right's away. I decided to take my TAX money from Tupelo. GAS, BEER, Cigerette's, and ALL..... I recently bought a SUV (you know a Gas Gussler), and every week I go to "Wild Bills" in Sherman to filler up. $2.04 a gal. compared to Tupelos $2.15 and up. I buy my Cig's, Beer, GAS. OUTSIDE OF TUPELO's City limit's, heck outside LEE Co. The point being I can stick it to Tupelo, MY WAY........ You think I joking, But the more people whom do this. Will feel better about Sticking it to TCC. And Whom Loses? The City of TUPELO............. IMO And this WILL WORK............

DS, I've started doing that months ago, before they even talked of a ban. I do not live in Tupelo, but I used to spend all my money in consumer goods in Tupelo. Old age has caused me to forget which episode I had that made me want to spend my money elsewhere. ;D

I've even thought about selling my house and getting outside Tupelo's TAXe's.

Well, if you plan to sell your house, you better do it soon. The real estate market is slowing down rapidly. You may not get what you paid for it when you bought it. Do so before the federal reserve raises the interest rates again. Especially if you bought the home on a variable interest rate.

looks like tuscalo0sa will also have a smoking ban but it's a litle different
TUSCALOOSA JOINS SMOKING BAN WAGON Posted by Angelia Clinton
An Alabama college town has placed a few limits on smokers. Thursday night the Tuscaloosa City Council approved a partial ban on smoking. Smoking will be allowed in bars and restaurants with outdoor patio areas. Restaurants that serve alcohol can allow smoking only after 10pm. The new rules, which come after months of compromise, take effect January 2nd, 2007. Starkville, Tupelo, and Oxford among other cities, recently have approved smoking bans
and is any city is going to have a smoking ban i think they should allow bars and resturants to searve beer or liquior on sundays to make up for lost profits from smoking bans. i think bars would be happy to open on sunday because they could get a lot of business during football season, expecially on super bowl sunday. it would also be good if new years eve falls on sunday too.

smoking after 10pm! that is funny.
I heard today that Jefferson Place has closed and is relocating in Saltillo just outside the city limits. There was another one too, but my mind went blank. As I was coming home this morning I saw a sign at a sports bar just inside Saltillo that said "come on in...we have ashtrays". WTG dude is all I could say.
I have been at the hospital all week with my mother...and they have complied in the front and moved the smoking area back a little bit, but the one outside admissions on the first floor is not. It is still right outside the door.
